The BetterMSL Academic Therapy and Tuition Service

The Better MutliSensory Learning Centre provides a variety of interventions including the Orton-Gillingham Methodology, Sonday Systems and other evidence-based programs to assist individuals with Dyslexia, Autism, ADHD, Speech and Language and other Specific Learning Difficulties.

The centre’s programs assist struggling individuals to become confident, focused and independent in their literacy and numeracy development.

One of the main programs provided by the centre is the Orton Gillingham method which is an evidenced based teaching methodology which integrates the brain’s visual, auditory and kinaesthetic neural networks. This approach seeks to stimulate and enhance working memory and thereby improve the learning ability of an individual (IDA, 2002b). This intervention involves the delivery of systematic, explicit and direct literacy and numeracy instruction. The approach includes teaching all aspects of the English language including sounds (phonemes), symbols (graphemes), meaningful word parts (morphemes), word and phrase meanings (semantics), sentences (syntax), longer passages (discourse), and the social use of language (pragmatics). These elements are consistently reinforced and progressively taught in a systematic and cumulative manner. The process is fluid and driven by the student’s strengths and weaknesses, with instructions and interventions being constantly examined and evaluated until they have reached mastery.

Lessons are individualised and personalised for each student based on their learning difficulties. The teaching plan is based on continuous assessments of the individual’s abilities, strengths and weaknesses and each educator ensures that each lesson is sequential, cumulative and information is continuously reviewed to reach mastery.
